Passive Optical Networks Pioneer

From PON Innovators to Patents!

SPADA Innovations, Inc. (SPADA) was incorporated in San Diego, CA. in 2010 by Mr. Joseph L. Vilella, former Director of Engineering of the Intelligence and Information Security Business Unit of Science Application International Corporation (SAIC) and two of his colleagues to take advantage of the immense promise of a new and highly innovative fiber optics type of network promoted by SAIC called Passive Optical Networks (PON).

PON promised to be a simpler, more economical, greener, faster, and more reliable way to bring voice, video and data to homes and businesses which at the time were dominated by copper networks.

Vilella had been vigorously promoting PON in the West for SAIC since 2008. In 2010, with Vilella at the helm, SPADA became SAIC’s PON strategic partner and was able to achieve three key deployments in the commercial sector despite strong opposition from the entrenched copper network IT community.

Trying to break the stranglehold of copper networks, SPADA worked to adapt PON efficiently in the Commercial Office Multi-Tenant Marketplace. This work led to the evolution and proof of its Mutually Secure Optical Data Network and Method.  Having successfully formulated, tested and proven the viability of this fundamental virtual information separation method across a PON network, SPADA submitted for patent application to the US Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) in 2012. Four patents of this method have been allowed by the USPTO between the years 2021 and 2024.

SPADA has been and continues to be focussed on the successful prosecution and assertion of its patents.
